2012 Preservation Honor Award
Hackley School Goodhue Memorial Hall
Peter Gisolfi Associates
Architects recently received the prestigious 2012 Preservation Honor
Award from AIA Connecticut for their 2010 reconstruction of Hackley
School's Goodhue Memorial Hall located in Tarrytown, NY.
Construction Associates is proud to be acknowledged as an important
member of the design team and general contractor of this Leed Gold
Certified preservation project for the school.
The Hackley
School's Goodhue Memorial Hall, which was built in 1903 was destroyed by
fire that left only the exterior stone walls remaining. The
reconstruction project, which took 18 months to complete, sought to
restore the historic building while adhering to Hackley's traditional
aesthetic, and combining the design with energy efficiency and
environmental sustainability. Although modern building codes
required many changes to the original interior design, they also allowed
for many improvements that were not available at the turn of the
century. Modern considerations such as effective airflow and
maximizing natural light are only a few of the sustainable
improvements that were considered in the design of the new two
story structure. Memorial Hall which now houses; classrooms,
lounge areas, offices, a barrel-vaulted reading room, library,
information center and art gallery.
Goodhue's new
18,000 square foot Memorial Hall reopened after 18 months of a
three-phase construction project at a cost of approximately $15M.
Reconstruction of the original 1903 neo-classic icon faced challenges
beginning with the excavation of bedrock in the former crawl space
basement areas. This was necessary to create space for the new ME&P
systems and for an archive research room. The salvaged exterior walls
and foundations were seismically monitored during the required rock
removal to protect the workers and monitor the integrity of existing
walls.
In keeping with the issues of environmental responsibility, deeply
engrained in Hackley's school curriculum, geothermal closed loop heating
and cooling systems, which can reduce energy loss by approximately, 70%
were installed.
Goodhue Memorial
Hall, long called the "heart of Hackley", was rebuilt with the foremost
goal of honoring maintaining the significance of the campus landmark
while incorporating modern environmental considerations for generation
to come. Construction Associates is proud to have worked with Peter
Gisolfi Associates and to be recognized as an integral member of their
design team.
